The Anansi Principle

A story about what
power really looks like.

The greatest strength on the continent was never in the biggest rooms. It was always in the connections. In the organising. In the web that holds everything together.

Anansi the Spider and his six sons were, by any measure, the smallest creatures in the world.

No roar like the lion. No thunder-step like the elephant. Exhausted by constant defeats from larger animals, Anansi did what none of the great beasts ever thought to do:

He organised.

He called on each son's unique gift: one who could see far, one who could build, one who could heal. And together they became something none of them could be alone.

Not the biggest.
Not the loudest.
But unbeatable.

SACCOs are Africa's Anansi.

Overlooked. Underestimated. Essential.

Conventional wisdom says SACCOs are small-scale, informal, and peripheral to the “real” financial system. What conventional wisdom misses is the web.

SACCOs organise farmers, traders, and workers into economic units bound by common purpose: geography, trade, profession. They unlock access to loans, investment, and banking services members would never reach alone.

They inject liquidity directly into local economies, fuelling consumption and enterprise at the community level. They are member-led, community-owned, and built on a trust that no bank can manufacture.

More than 30% of GDP.

The backbone of agriculture, housing, and SME financing.

But Anansi's sons were scattered.

For all their strength, Africa's SACCOs have remained fragmented: disconnected from each other, invisible to the broader economy, and locked out of the infrastructure that would let them become what they were always capable of being.

The web existed. It just was not connected.

We are Anansi.

We chose this name because we believe what the story teaches: the greatest power on the continent was never in the biggest rooms. It was always in the connections. In the organising. In the web that holds everything together.

"Our job is simple. Connect the web. Step back. And watch what happens when Africa's SACCOs finally have the infrastructure they deserve."
